Leek (Allium porrum)

Family: Alliaceae

Leeks have been cultivated as a food crop for thousands of years. First domesticated in the Mediterranean region, they are now grown and eaten worldwide. Leeks are related to onions, but they do not form rounded bulbs. Instead, they have tightly bundled leaf bases that are tender and flavorful. Many cultivars are available, including some that are best grown as annuals and others that should be overwintered and harvested during their second year.
