Amaranthus caudatus is an ancient crop plant that originated in South America. Originally cultivated by the Inca people as a source of grain, it is now a popular ornamental plant. It is very easy to grow and tolerant of poor conditions. It produces unique, colorful stalks of flowers through the summer and fall. It will persist for several seasons in the subtropics and tropics.

Cultivation: Medium-sized to large annual for USDA hardiness zones 4 to 11. Grows best in full sun with moderate moisture. May be grown as a perennial in zones 8 to 11.

Size: Reaches 2' to 4' (60 cm to 1.2 m) tall with a spread of 18" to 2' (46 cm to 60 cm).

Flowering: Blooms from mid-summer through early fall.
