Chicory (Cichorium intybus)

Family: Asteraceae

Although it is native to Europe, Chicory has become a common weed in many parts of North America. It grows under very poor conditions, including salt-infused, highly compacted soil along roadsides. Many country roads and highways are lined with sky-blue chicory flowers throughout the summer. Chicory is notoriously invasive in natural areas. Gardeners who cultivate it as an ornamental report that chicory is difficult to eradicate or control once established.
