Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale)

This is one of several Crocus-like flowers that bloom in the autumn, but it is probably the most popular in cultivation. Native to Europe, it has been bred for centuries to produce several cultivars that vary in flower size, shape, and color. The leaves of Colchicum autumnale appear in the springime and fade through the summer. The flowers are produced from leafless bulbs in the autumn. Individual plants are attractive, but they are most striking when planted in large groups. All parts of Colchicum plants are toxic if ingested.
