Dianthus (Dianthus chinensis)
Family: Caryophyllaceae
Dianthus is a large genus of about 300 species, including several that are popular ornamentals. This is perhaps the most widely grown, found in gardens throughout the world in nearly every climate. Originating in a broad region of Asia, Dianthus chinensis has been bred in cultivation to produce many cultivars. These vary in the pattern and shade of colors on the flower petals. Usually grown as an annual, Dianthus chinensis survives winters in most climates but usually becomes less vigorous each year.
