Coral tree (Erythrina)

Family: Fabaceae

There are over 100 species in the genus Erythrina, distributed in tropical countries worldwide. Most are trees with large, showy clusters of orange-red flowers. Notable species include Erythrina variegata, a large, tropical tree that is grown worldwide, and Erythrina crista-galli, a medium-sized South American tree that grows well in the subtropics. Erythrina herbacea, native to southern North America, is a shrub that can survive as a perennial in areas colder than its native range. Most Erythrina species are easy to grow and remarkably drought tolerant. Children should be kept away from the attractive seeds, which are highly toxic in all species.
