California poppy (Eschscholzia californica)

Family: Papaveraceae

California is home to some extraordinary wildflowers, and this is perhaps the most famous. In addition to the natural species, which bears flowers in bright shades of yellow, orange, and red, several cultivars have been bred. These have a wider range of colors, and also include some multicolored and double varieties. They are easy to grow in high levels of light and can tolerate poor, rocky soil.
