Banyan (Ficus benghalensis)

Family: Moraceae

The banyan is famous for its unusual architecture. It begins life as a strangler fig, germinating in the top of a tree that it eventually engulfs. When mature it develops stilt roots from its branches and spreads to cover large areas. This Indian species is the most common banyan in cultivation, but there are several others, including a few banyan species native to southern Florida.
