The checkered lily is a European wildflower and old-fashioned perennial garden plant. Also called snake head fritillary, and guinea hen flower, it is known for its unusual, patterned flowers. It is a favorite spring-flowering plant for low-maintenance or naturalistic landscapes. The checkered lily is highly toxic if ingested, so it should not be planted where it might come into contact with children or pets.
