Heliotropes are popular garden plants that are known for their sweetly fragrant flowers. Native to Peru, they are evergreen shrubs in the tropics and warm subtropics. In temperate zones they are grown as annuals, often planted in containers or beside patios where their fragrance can be appreciated. Many cultivars are available with a range of flower colors and scents. Heliotrope flowers are also famous for attracting butterflies.

Cultivation: Small to medium-sized shrub for USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8. Grows best in partial to full sun with moderate to high moisture. May be grown as a perennial in zones 9 to 11.
