Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens)
Family: Brassicaceae
Several species of candytuft are grown in gardens, but this is the most popular. Native to the Mediterranean region, Iberis sempervirens has been cultivated for centuries and has a wide range of reported medicinal properties. Often called "evergreen candytuft," its leaves persist year-round in areas with mild winters. It forms low, spreading mats of foliage that are covered with white blossoms in the springtime. Several cultivars are available, including some with a particularly compact habit. Iberis sempervirens grows best in well-drained soil and should be cut back severely after flowering.
