Sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua)

Family: Altingiaceae

There are four species in the genus Liquidambar, but this is the species most commonly cultivated under the name sweetgum. It is native to warm temperate areas of North and Central America and is grown worldwide as an ornamental tree. Its leaves are colorful in autumn, and this trait is enhanced in several cultivars. Sweetgum has invasive roots that can be a problem near pipes, sidewalks, and buildings. Its fruits can also be a nuisance, notorious for their sharp spines.
