Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis)

Lobelia cardinalis has a vast native distribution from Canada to northern South America. It is also grown worldwide as a perennial garden plant. The natural species has intensely red flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds. There are several cultivars, with white, pink, or purple flowers. The plant is striking in the landscape and is an excellent source of cut flowers. All parts of the plant may be poisonous if ingested.
