This species is native to the eastern United States but is grown in temperate gardens worldwide. It is an excellent addition to the perennial border, providing intensely colored flowers that are attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. It is easy to grow with adequate moisture and little care. Several cultivars have been developed with flowers that may be white, pink, crimson, or purple.
