Monkey cups (Nepenthes)

Family: Nepenthaceae

Nepenthes is one of the most commonly cultivated carnivorous plants. There are over 100 species in the genus, native to tropical lands in the Indian Ocean and Pacific. In the tropics they form scrambling vines that quickly colonize disturbed areas. In temperate regions many species grow well in hanging baskets, either in greenhouses or in sunny windows. Insects are trapped in the pitchers, which are specialized structures borne on leaf tips. Among the natural species and artificial hybrids there is great variation in the shape and coloration of the pitchers.
