Japanese pieris (Pieris japonica)
Pieris japonica is grown for its sweetly fragrant, bell-shaped flowers that appear in late winter or springtime. Its emerging foliage is also ornamental, with each new flush of leaves appearing with a reddish color before turning green. Many cultivars have been developed, including a range of flower colors from creamy white to bright pink, and some cultivars with bright red emerging foliage. Variegated forms are also available. Native to eastern Asia, Pieris japonica is grown as an ornamental landscape shrub in temperate regions worldwide. When given rich, acidic soil it is easy to grow and durable. It can be more challenging when the soil conditions are less favorable.
