Black pepper (Piper nigrum)

Black pepper is one of the world's most important and valuable spices. Native to India, it became common in the cuisines of Europe and Asia thousands of years ago. Today black pepper is familiar worldwide and is cultivated in many tropical regions. The immature fruits are harvested and dried to produce black peppercorns. Many cultivars of Piper nigrum are available with different fruiting characteristics.

Cultivation: Medium-sized perennial vine for USDA hardiness zones 10 to 11. Grows best in partial sun with moderate moisture.

Size: Reaches 10' to 15' (3 m to 4.6 m) tall with a spread of 1' to 3' (30 cm to 90 cm).

Flowering: Blooms year-round or from mid-summer through late summer.

Fruiting: Bears fruit year-round or from early fall through late fall.
