Balloon flower (Platycodon grandiflorus)

The balloon flower is an attractive flowering perennial that is popular throughout the world's temperate regions. Also called Chinese bellflower, the species is native to northeast Asia. Many cultivars have been produced, including a range of sizes and single or double flowers. The colors range from white through light pink to deep blue, the most common.

Cultivation: Small perennial for USDA hardiness zones 3 to 9. Grows best in partial to full sun with moderate moisture.

Size: Reaches 1' to 2' (30 cm to 60 cm) tall with a spread of 1' to 2' (30 cm to 60 cm).

Flowering: Blooms from mid-summer through late summer.
