The African species Scabiosa atropurpurea is widely grown as an annual in temperate regions and a perennial in the subtropics and tropics. S. caucasica and S. columbaria are grown as perennials in temperate climates. There is a wide range of flower colors in the genus, including white, pink, purple, blue, red, and black.
