California redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)

Family: Cupressaceae

The California redwood is believed to be the tallest living thing on Earth. In 2006 a specimen of over 115 m was discovered in California's Redwood National Park. Redwood forests are breathtaking, like galleries of enormous columns reaching to the sky. The species is native to a strip of Pacific coastline from central California to Oregon, but is also grown outside its native range. It is a valuable timber species for construction and furniture.
