Blue eyed grass (Sisyrinchium)

The genus Sisyrinchium is found throughout the Americas, extending from Canada south to Argentina and Chile. There are about 100 species, including some that are grown as garden ornamentals. Some species grow well in perennial gardens, including the popular Sisyrinchium angustifolium. Several species can tolerate more moisture and thrive on the margins of ponds and streams. There is a great deal of variation among the natural species and cultivars, including flowers in shades of blue, purple, white and yellow.

Cultivation: Small to medium-sized perennial for USDA hardiness zones 3 to 11. Grows best in partial to full sun with moderate to high moisture.

Size: Reaches 6" to 18" (15 cm to 46 cm) tall with a spread of 4" to 1' (10 cm to 30 cm).

Flowering: Blooms from late spring through early summer.
