Giant Amazon waterlily (Victoria amazonica)

Family: Nymphaeaceae

Victoria amazonica is one of the world's most fascinating plants. Its leaves are enormous, reaching nearly 3 meters in diameter. Native to slow-moving waterways in the rainforests of South America, it has been in cultivation in temperate regions since 1849. It requires warm water and plenty of sunlight. In temperate areas it can be started indoors in the winter, planted outdoors in early summer, and brought to flowering size by autumn.
